Christmas is a special time in Kankakee County. While dates vary from year to year, here are some of the special traditions to watch for. Each has taken place for a decade or longer. All are open to the general public. Details about the 2008 events will be posted on our events calendar as they are made available.

Coloring contest
The Daily Journal has run a Christmas coloring contest annually for more than half a century. The 2009 contest was the 53rd. There are categories for senior citizens, special education, children in various age groups and families. The family category has traditionally been a favorite. It is the one category where everyone, regardless of age, can participate. All other entries exclude help from parents. The prizes range from $25 for first place to $10 for third place. The entry is always published before Thanksgiving. Daily Journal cartoonist Steve York has drawn the entry for the past several years. The winners are always announced in the Christmas Eve edition.

Each year The Salvation Army conducts a food drive at Christmas, supported by merchants throughout the community. The groceries are given away and also provide lunches for the needy year-round. The community has contributed as many as 500 barrels of food. Many schools, churches and merchants will set up collection barrels.
In conjunction with the food drive, The Salvation Army will have bellringers by kettles at many locations. Volunteer bellringers are always needed. Many service groups volunteer to help.
