The Kankakee River Valley is known for the beautiful and historic Kankakee River, which winds through many communities in Kankakee County. Fifty-seven miles of the river run through the county, providing opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking and more.
The Potawatomi Indians lived along the Kankakee River, which they referred to as Theatiki which means "wolf", "swampy place" and "wonderful land". The wonderful land in the Kankakee River Valley is rich in natural resources that are the result of reminants left by three enormous glaciers that passed through the area thousands of years ago.
