Governors State University
When Governors State University in University Park was founded in 1969, change was in the air. The Civil Rights, anti-war, and women’s movements transformed society and altered perspectives. Now, in 2009 as GSU marks its 40th anniversary, the nation is again facing great challenges. Calls for change at all levels of society have led GSU, once more, to a renewed commitment to serve students and the community.
Throughout this anniversary year, GSU will open wide its doors, inviting everyone — area residents, current students, alumni, retirees, and others — to celebrate academic achievement and accessibility. Special programs, open to the public, are designed to incite conversation, invite creativity, and excite innovation. Forums, workshops, symposia, film screenings, alumni events, and social gatherings will continue a 40-year tradition of bringing people and ideas together.
The university is expanding the programs offered at its Kankakee Education Center (KEC), to undergraduate courses in Communication, Criminal Justice, and Business. In August, the first class of GSU students in Kankakee will earn their Master’s in Educational Administration. A new educational administration cohort will begin soon. Other programs beginning soon at the KEC may include the Master’s in Public Administration and the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, which allows students to combine prior college credit with life experience towards their degree.
In addition to the programs offered to area residents at the Kankakee Education Center, GSU is also taking its services to Kankakee Community College. At a desk in the KCC Transfer Center, GSU advisors, admissions counselors, financial aid advisors, and career services counselors meet with community college students seeking information and direction about education opportunities at GSU.
Throughout the past 40 years, GSU has awarded degrees to more than 43,000 students.
